Forward To Liberty

From time to time my friend Eric gets a good pixel lashing for not discussing what some commenter thinks he should cover.

So let me discuss the more profound event. The things not asked for or discussed. Because that which is empty is as pregnant with meaning as that which is full. What is not being discussed (much) is social issues.

This is purely anecdotal but, in a comment I had a social conservative give way on issues I would never have expected. With the usual quibble of course ("as long as I don't have to pay for it" - fine with me, in fact I think that is the point). Of course there is still the contentious issue of abortion. But I have an answer for that: You Want What??????????????

Now in years past such a post on abortion would have started a right nice flame war. Crickets.

And about time too. Because David Axelrod has a plan.

The president's influential counselor, David Axelrod, attempted this week to insinuate into the election what Democrats used to deride as "wedge issues." In an interview he said abortion will "certainly be an issue," for Democrats. It will be raised "across the country."
Well good for him. I have provided an answer that should shut him down in short order. Here. Again: You Want What??????????????

I think my social conservative friends are getting it. A libertarian stance towards politics is safest. Any thing else just feeds the beast.

Exactly...in addition to being the only logically-justifiable argument for a free society. If you don't support the right of every peaceful person to live the way they see fit--whether you approve of it or not--well, then, I don't know what it is you want, but it ain't liberty.

This starts from a dishonest position -- that the only argument against abortion is the sexual freedom of the mother.

Nonsense. All support for restricting abortion is based overwhelmingly on concern about the OTHER HUMAN BEING INVOLVED -- you know, the one you have to "dilate& extract," and otherwise kill to carry out the act.

I support your right to do whatever you want to do in the privacy of your bedroom --as long as it doesn't involve killing somebody.

One question: if each was legally free to peacefully pursue his or her own bliss - whatever that might entail - can I rely on my neighbor to not violate the rights of others while pursuing his happiness? Human behavior does lean toward selfishness and stupidity, like it or not...so what guarantees to you offer to those of us responsible enough to abide existing laws, against those who can't be bothered to do so even now? What stick would you wield for them alongside your proffered carrot of liberty? You'll end up needing a stick, you know.

Tom,

How exactly are you going to prevent it short of vagina police?

I mean - seriously - we have the drug war precedent for urine testing. What we will need is weekly testing of all women of child bearing age. Say age 9 to age 60. That is going to be real popular. Won't get to that? Of course it will. Politicians will pander. Just as they did in the drug war.

RU-486? Menstrual extractions? Birth control pills as abortifacients? And the 10,000 other things people will invent to get around the law. There will be internet sites explaining how to do a D&C with equipment you can buy (until Gment makes it illegal and then there will be stealing and black markets and shipments from France) over the counter at the hardware store.

And then there is the black market that will form. "I know a guy who knows a guy...."

What makes you think an anti-abortion law will work any better than our drug laws?

I know this is really hard for you but don't you think you could find a way to accomplish your purpose without hiring a bunch of government goons?

And then what happens when some day this power you have given government over female privates is used against you and yours.

I don't trust government with that power.

"Every power you give the government to do good will eventually be used by the government to do evil."

Yeah. They need some powers and there will be some evil. Let us keep it small.

Well of course not. Depend on other humans? Are you nuts. I propose we lock them up to prevent anything bad happening to you. Or cheaper might just be to lock you up to keep you safe.

Which is to say: you are delusional to even hope for utopia.

Re: abortion again.

And then you will have the women and their whipped mates (we are all whipped to one degree or another - facts of life) who don't want government control over their privates voting for Democrats. Heck. I'd do it too. Without being whipped. Just for principle. Or spite.

The right is now winning on the smaller government idea. Don't blow it.

The electorate is in an ugly mood and has no allegiance to party. Smaller government. Period. No exceptions.

You got a social problem you want to fix - fix it yourself. No compromise. Keep the MOFO Gment out of it. No exceptions. The exceptions are the camel's nose under the tent. And I don't want no camel or stinkin government agent in my tent. Or snooping around my tent.

I mean seriously where does this "government can fix my world" attitude come from? I got news for you No It Can't. And you know this from your own experience. Where does your "this time it will be different" stupidity come from? Faith in government? Isn't that supposed to be a liberal thing? In fact I think I posted some verses from Samuel saying that when people trade their faith in God for faith in government they have gone astray. Take it to heart.
