Evolution

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain. - John Adams

But then these children go to the Ivy Covered Snob factories and then think they can run before they know how to walk.

Today I had an inspiration. For years i've been trying to understand how people could develop liberal ideas which in some cases are so obviously out of touch with how the world works that it is baffling.

I finally think I may have figured it out. (here's my thesis sentence.)

Conservatism CAUSES Liberalism!

The quote from John Adams is a perfect example of the Mechanism by which this idea works.

Rational Thinking creates conditions of prosperity for families and communities. Prosperity translates into more leasure time and less contact with real world conditions. (at least on the part of the prosperous)

Children growing up in these prosperous conditions are shielded from many harsh realities, making them ill prepared to see reality.
(people have to KILL and BUTCHER animals to eat. Murderers MURDER. Some people work to EXHAUSTION in order to survive. etc.)

The 1950s were one of the most prosperous times in the history of our nation. Many parents didn't want their children to suffer and do without the way they did growing up in the 1930s. The good economic habits learned by suffering from the 1930s positioned many parents to be far better off in the 1950s, with the result of a far more indulgent lifestyle for their children.

Children born in 1940 would have been college age in 1958. The fact that so many were even going to college is indicative of how much more prosperous american families had become. The baby boom would have fueled college enrollment like never before, and of course people accustomed to dealing with the offspring of the wealthy (who prior to the 50s were likely to make up the bulk of college students) would have developed some ideas that would be common to the idle rich. (not the ones who MADE the money, just the family memebers that enjoyed it.)

Needless to say, the baby boom college kids would be easy prey for the indoctrinations of their liberal college professors, and the rest is history.

In the book "Leftism Revisited" the Author Erik Von Kuehnelt-Leddihin, mentions that every Leftist movement in history was initiated by the Wives and Children of Upper Middle Class and Wealthy Men. Why is this ? Lack of real world pressures on the Wives and Children. (Marx,Engels e.g.)

I just finished mentioning this idea to a friend of mine and he pointed out that there are some analogies in nature. He said that the Dodo bird evolved on an island and in the absence of predators into a fat slow dumpy walking bird. (lack of evolutionary pressure to do otherwise.) As soon as a predator showed up (People and our pets.) The bird died out quickly.

It had evolved in conditions which were far milder than conditions which existed in the rest of the world. As soon as the two worlds met, the Dodo was ill prepared to deal with the consequences.

Liberals are like Dodo (in several ways) insofar as they evolved in conditions which lack real world pressures. I suspect they will come to the same end, and likewise bring us with them.
